Scarlett Johansson’s skincare company The Outset is shutting down after roughly four years in business.
The brand, which Johansson co-founded with beauty executive Kate Foster Lengyel in 2022, announced on Sept. 28 that it would wind down its operations. The announcement appeared on The Outset’s website, where the company thanked customers for supporting the brand throughout its run.
The company has also stopped taking new online orders through its website. Existing orders, however, will continue to be processed, according to the brand’s closing notice.
Scarlett Johansson and Kate Foster Founded The Outset in 2022

Johansson and Foster Lengyel launched The Outset with the goal of creating a simplified approach to skincare. Before The Outset, Foster Lengyel held executive positions connected to beauty and fashion companies including Victoria’s Secret, Juicy Couture and NYDJ.
Scarlett Johansson had previously worked with major beauty brands and said when announcing her own company that she wanted to create something that felt more personal and aligned with her own approach to beauty.
The Outset launched with a small collection designed around a straightforward skincare routine. Its products were positioned around gentle, uncomplicated formulas, with the initial lineup later expanding beyond its original five products.
The Outset Expanded Into Major Retailers
The brand gained distribution through several well-known retailers during its time on the market.
The Outset was initially carried by Sephora and later appeared through retailers and beauty platforms including Nordstrom, Goop, Amazon, QVC, Revolve and others. Its product range included items such as the Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum and Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer.
Despite its celebrity co-founder, the company had positioned itself as more than a traditional celebrity beauty line. Johansson does not maintain personal social media accounts, and the brand’s leadership had previously emphasized building The Outset as a standalone skincare business rather than relying solely on her fame.
Kate Foster Lengyel Left The Company in 2025
The company’s leadership also changed before its closure. Foster Lengyel stepped down from her position in April 2025. Karen Raghavan, previously associated with Allies of Skin, later served as The Outset’s fractional chief executive on a contract basis from May through August 2026.
The Outset has not publicly given a specific reason for its decision to close.
The Outset Joins a Wave of Celebrity Beauty Closures

The closure comes during a period when several celebrity-backed beauty businesses have also left the market.
Gwen Stefani’s GXVE Beauty shut down in 2026 after previously disappearing from Sephora, while Drew Barrymore’s Flower Beauty closed in 2025 after more than a decade in business. Other celebrity-founded beauty and wellness ventures have also faced closures or significant changes in recent years.
For now, The Outset’s website is no longer accepting new purchases, while the company says existing orders will still be fulfilled. The brand has not announced whether its products will remain available through third-party retailers after the closure.
