Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance during Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue on Saturday Night Live, turning a playful joke about the actress’s past relationships into a memorable celebrity moment.
Johnson returned to host SNL for the third time on Saturday, October 3, just one day before her 37th birthday. During her monologue, the actress joked about her history of dating musicians before Swift unexpectedly joined her on stage.
While talking about having supportive friends who never judged her romantic choices, Johnson introduced Taylor Swift by jokingly calling her “my literal therapist.”
“I’m not — I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift replied, joking that Johnson regularly appears at her home with a bottle of wine and shares personal stories.
Dakota Johnson responded by asking whether that was not exactly what a therapist does, leading to more playful back-and-forth between the two friends.
Swift continued the joke by saying Johnson would come over, relax on her couch, and “overshare” while she simply reacted with comments like, “Damn, that’s crazy.”
The humorous exchange highlighted the close friendship between Swift and Johnson, who have known each other for several years.
During the monologue, Johnson also joked about her relationships with musicians, including her former public relationships with Chris Martin and Role Model. She humorously suggested that dating musicians was her way of helping people avoid unnecessary emotional struggles.
Swift joined in on the joke, giving a playful reaction connected to her husband Travis Kelce’s background.
For her surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, Swift wore a plaid off-the-shoulder mini dress by Simkhai, paired with a Saint Laurent belt and Burberry leather boots. Johnson also made a fashion statement during the episode, wearing a red latex Versace dress from the brand’s Fall 2013 collection along with Giuseppe Zanotti heels and a diamond necklace.
The friendship between Swift and Johnson continued throughout the episode. At the end of the show, Swift returned to the stage carrying a turquoise-and-white birthday cake for Johnson. The actress appeared excited by the surprise, jumping up before hugging the singer.
Their friendship has continued to attract attention over the years. Johnson attended Swift’s wedding to NFL star Travis Kelce in July, further showing their close connection.

The two celebrities have also collaborated professionally. Johnson appeared in Swift’s latest music video for “Patient Zero,” featured in the deluxe edition of The Life of a Showgirl. Earlier, Johnson presented Swift with the first-ever Artist Director Honors award during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
The surprise SNL appearance gave fans another glimpse into the friendship between Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson, combining comedy, personal jokes, and a celebration of their long-standing bond.
